3rd Annual Barkslip's Fruit School 2009

Opening kick off to Barkslip's Fruit school will be the Super Fruit Bowl February 14th

This year Fruit School consists of four classes offering opportunities to get more comfortable with the care and proliferation of fruit bearing plants. Creating beautiful, and nutritional abundance in our lives.

Classes

Beginning fruit basics with Andrew Goodheart Brown and T. Bud Barkslip
When: Saturday Feb 14th, 10:00-3:00
Where: Montford Rec center

What:This class is great for the person who just bought some trees or is planning to. As well as the amateur orchardist brushing up, or wanting some new perspectives. A wholistic aproach to fruit tree care will be emphasized, employing many permaculture principles. We will plant our official annual Super Bowl Fruit tree and discuss basic pruning techniques. Bring appropriate clothing as we will be outside for this part of the program.

Advanced Orcharding with Lee Calhoun
When: Saturday March 7th, 10:00- 3:00
Where: Montford Rec center

What:This class will be a chance to learn from Southern apple guru Lee Calhoun as he shares with us about southern varieties and making them grow, advanced pruning, orchard care, and espalier. He ran an apple nursery with over 400 hundred varieties and knows every mistake the public is capable of. Come spend the day with Lee and learn through the experience of his stories.

Bench Grafting, and cloning around with Professor T. Bud Barkslip
When: Saturday March 28th, 10:00-3:00
Where: Montford Rec Center

What: Professor Barkslip will hurl you through the wild world of cloning. Archaically know as the art of grafting, you will learn to skill yourself with a very sharp knife and join together two pieces of living wood into a growing tree using the cleft and whip and tongue graft. Also discussed, will be follow up care, varieties, applications and other matters of importance the professor deems relevant at the time. Plan on leaving with fruit trees. Note:There will be a nomimal materials charge for more than 1 fruit tree. 

Plant Propagation with Wes Burlingame
When: Saturday April 4th, 10:00- 3:00
Where: TBA

What: Wes will guide us through hands on techniques for plant propagation. Sarting plants from seed, cuttings, layering and division. Low tech procedures easy for the home amateur will be emphasized.
